What is Flovent?
This adrenergic pharmaceutical is used for inhalation in the treatment of lower respiratory tract diseases (COPD, asthma).
This drug belongs to the group of glucocorticosteroids (GCS) with fluticasone propionate as the active ingredient.
What is it used for?
The purpose of Flovent is to treat bronchial asthma, COPD if the patient needs treatment with corticosteroids.
How to use the inhaler?
Inhalations with fluticasone propionate should be regular, regardless of the frequency of attacks. Patients usually use doses ranging from 100 to 250 mcg twice daily, 12 hours apart.
The use of the inhaler is explained in detail in the medication package insert.
For inhalation, do the following steps:
- shake the inhalation can;
- exhale air from the lungs;
- take a deep breath and at the same time press the button on the inhaler;
- hold your breath for as long as possible.
If the patient previously had nocturnal attacks of bronchial asthma, then this 1 dose is inhaled before going to bed. If daytime attacks are more frequent, then the dose of the drug is inhaled in the morning.
After use, rinse your mouth with water to avoid oral candidiasis.
Elderly patients and patients with impaired renal or liver function do not need a special dosage adjustment.
Overdose with fluticasone propionate is unlikely to occur. Prolonged excessive use of the drug can theoretically cause disruption of the adrenal glands, which is reversible.
Overdose is treated with gastric lavage and sorbents. The antidote is unknown.

What does fluticasone do?
If fluticasone propionate is administered in the form of inhalation, then the drug enters directly into the lower respiratory tract (trachea, bronchi, lungs).
In this case, it produces a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect. As a result, the activity of painful symptoms and the frequency of asthma exacerbations decrease.
The medicine does not significantly affect the functioning of the kidneys and adrenal glands, as well as the hypothalamic-pituitary function of the body.
When should I take my inhaler?
You should use the inhaler to help prevent your asthma symptoms from occurring in the first place. Do inhalations twice a day, every day, approximately 12 hours apart, as prescribed by your doctor.
Does fluticasone help with cough?
Anti-inflammatory treatment with Fluticasone inhaler reduces cough in healthy adults who do not smoke. A cough may be the symptom of lower respiratory tract illness. Other symptoms may include sputum production, wheeze, shortness of breath and chest tightness. If your cough does not reduce but worsens over time, consult your health care provider.
How long does it take to work?
Flovent does not work immediately. After you start using this medicine, it may take 1-2 weeks or longer of daily use until your condition improve. The inhaler is not used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. Always have a fast-acting (rescue) bronchodilator medicine near to treat sudden breathing problems, like Ventolin, Proventil, or Xopenex.
Why is Flovent so expensive?
Unlike injections or pills, asthma inhalers (including Flovent) consist of several moving parts that affect patent rights and the manufacturing process — and ultimately they affect the cost of an inhaler, making it very high.
In addition to the medicine itself, an inhaler also has a propellant agent to deliver the dose of the medicine through the airway into the lungs, in addition to the outer canister.
It is great news that today you can buy generic medication for asthma that is much less expensive. Generic inhalers use the same active ingredients and comply with the same safety and packaging standards as their expensive brand name counterparts.
Why rinse mouth after fluticasone?
You should rinse your mouth each time after using fluticasone propionate as the medication can alter the normal balance of bacteria in your mouth. Thrush can be treated but the best option is to prevent it by rinsing your month. Rinse your mouth with water after using the inhaler and spit the water out. Do not swallow it.
Which inhaler to use first Albuterol or Flovent?
If you use more than one inhaled medicine at a time, use the bronchodilator (“rescue inhaler”) first. It will open up the breathing tubes so the other drugs can get to the lungs better. So, first administer medication like albuterol, and then 5 minutes later administer fluticasone.
Does the drug cause anxiety?
In some cases, the medication can cause anxiety and other side effects:
- oral candidiasis;
- allergic reactions – angioedema, rash, shortness of breath, anaphylactic shock;
- oppression of the adrenal glands, reduction of bone mineralization, growth retardation in children;
- hypokalemia, hyperglycemia;
- nausea, dyspeptic symptoms;
